The brief
Held in Guangzhou and virtually, the China Mobile Global Partner Conference was a hybrid event for the first time in 2020. With a theme of “5G integration into all industries, digital intelligence leading the future”, the event explored the potential of commercialised 5G service while promoting its construction, application, integration and innovation.
Pico was appointed by China Mobile’s Migu to create the conference’s H5 webpage, an online virtual city, and multi-themed online virtual exhibition halls with 360-degree panoramic view function to display brand information from nearly 150 companies.
Insight
The 2020 conference drew much industry attention as it was regarded as a starting point for commercialised 5G services’ construction and development in China. The event attracted hundreds of senior executives from well-known local and overseas companies. A fresh hybrid experience would both reflect the forward-looking theme and offer the capacity for wider participation.
Solution
The team created a 360-degree panoramic 3D virtual city platform using Web3D technology. Designed as an optimal mobile phone experience, users simply opened the H5 webpage on their phone for access. They could then interact with the virtual city by touching the screen to rotate, drag, zoom and pan.
The virtual city’s multi-themed virtual panoramic exhibition halls were equipped with dual interactive technology, with content displayed either through mobile phones or virtual reality headsets. An automated photo generation function enabled visitors to select their preferred scene, choose the frame colour, portrait location and size, and generate a personalised photo for saving and sharing.
Virtual character animation was another online conference highlight. The virtual characters guided and interacted with participants through vivid body movements, mimicking the experience of offline conferences.
To encourage as many participants as possible to explore the platform, a points accumulation system was added to its virtual environment. Users could gain points by interactions such as registration and sign-up, daily log-in, checking in to the virtual scenes, browsing content, and creating photos in the exhibition halls. Points could then be redeemed for gifts once certain totals had been reached.
Results
- During the three-day conference, more than 100 million of engagements and 50 million unique visitors were recorded on its online platform
- Over 250,000 views recorded for WeChat promotion
